The anxious dog kit: 20 things that actually help
These are our top picks

1Snuggle Puppy heartbeat comfort toy
A soft toy with a battery pulse unit and a warming pack inside it. Sixty three thousand reviews for a reason: for a dog who cannot settle alone at night, a slow rhythmic sound in the bed is often the one thing that works when nothing else has.
View on Amazon
The single most useful thing you can own for a dog who struggles on her own. Stuff it, freeze it overnight, hand it over as you pick up your keys. The departure stops predicting emptiness and starts predicting the best fifteen minutes of the day.

3Adaptil Calm home diffuser with 30 day refill
A plug-in that releases a synthetic copy of the pheromone a nursing mother produces. The published evidence is mixed and it will not do the job on its own, but it is cheap, it does nothing unpleasant, and plenty of UK owners run one through firework season and keep buying it.
View on AmazonMost of what gets sold as a calming product is sold to the owner, not to the dog. This guide is the short list of things that genuinely change how a worried dog copes, grouped by the situation that sets him off rather than by the aisle they sit in.
Twenty products, all available on Amazon UK. Before any of them, one honest sentence: nothing on this page treats anxiety. What the things below do is make a worried dog more comfortable and take the edge off the ordinary worries that fall short of a clinical problem.
This is general guidance, not veterinary advice. We are dog owners writing about what has worked for us and for the people we talk to. We are not vets or behaviourists, we have not met your dog, and nothing here is a diagnosis or a treatment. If your dog's behaviour worries you, speak to your vet first.
First work out what you are actually dealing with
Anxious is a word people use for four quite different problems, and the fix is different for each.
Separation distress
Starts within minutes of you leaving. Vocalising, pacing, drooling, scratching at the door, occasionally soiling a house-trained dog. The tell is that it happens whether you are gone for ten minutes or ten hours, and it is at its worst at the start.
Noise phobia
Fireworks, thunder, gunshots on the television, the smoke alarm. Sudden onset, obvious trigger, and it generalises fast: a dog who panicked at fireworks in November is often frightened of the bin lorry by February if nothing is done.
Novelty and environmental worry
The vet, the groomer, the car, visitors, a new floor surface. She is fine at home and falls apart outside her routine. This is the one that responds best to management and repetition.
Under-stimulation dressed up as anxiety
Chewing the skirting boards, digging the sofa, whining at nothing. Genuinely common and genuinely misdiagnosed. A working breed on two short lead walks a day and no mental work will look anxious and is mostly just bored.
Buy a camera before you buy anything else. Almost every owner we speak to is guessing about what happens after the door closes. Twenty minutes of footage tells you whether you have a dog who cries for three minutes and then sleeps, or a dog who does not settle at all. Those two dogs need completely different things, and it is worth knowing which one you have before you spend anything.
Sleep and settling
An anxious dog who does not sleep properly gets more anxious, and the loop tightens. Watch how he sleeps for a week before you spend anything, as we set out in the dog beds guide. A curler and a sprawler want opposite beds and buying the wrong one is the most expensive mistake on this page.

4Calming donut bed, medium, washable plush
The raised rim is the point. A dog who curls tight and presses her spine into something gets a continuous edge to lean on all the way round. Check the internal diameter rather than the external one, because the rim eats a surprising amount of it.

5Hooded cave bed, 78 x 63 x 23cm
For the burrower who ends up under your duvet every night. A hood gives him the enclosed dark he is actually looking for, which is usually cheaper and quieter than losing the sofa cushions to him.
View on Amazon
6Bedsure orthopaedic dog sofa, 97 x 71 x 16.5cm
Anxious dogs are often sore dogs. A stiff older dog who cannot get comfortable will get up, circle, resettle and pant half the night. A supportive base with a bolster edge fixes a problem that looks behavioural but is not.
View on AmazonGive her a den
Dogs settle better in a defined, enclosed, slightly dark space with one entrance. That is not sentimentality, it is just what they choose when you give them the option. A covered crate in a quiet corner is the cheapest version. Our crate guide covers sizing and the four crate types.
One rule that matters more than the equipment: the door stays open. A crate a dog chooses is a den. A crate a dog is shut into while frightened is a trap, and it will make the next fortnight worse rather than better.

7Windproof crate cover for wire cages
Covering three sides of a wire crate turns a cage into a den. Leave the front open, never shut a frightened dog in, and let her choose to go there. If she will not go in voluntarily, the cover is not the problem and the crate is not ready.

8ThunderShirt calming jacket, medium
Constant gentle pressure across the torso. It does not work for every dog and the studies are modest, but it is one of the few things you can put on in ninety seconds when the fireworks have already started. Fit it snug, not tight, and get him used to wearing it on a calm day first.

Bonfire Night is the fixed point in the British calendar for this, but the season now runs from mid October to New Year and Diwali sits in the middle of it. Start preparing in the first week of October, not on the fifth of November.
The free measures do more than the paid ones. Close the curtains, put a radio or the television on at normal volume, walk her before dusk so she does not need to go out after dark, and do not fuss over her when she hides. Comforting a frightened dog is fine and does not reinforce fear, but following her about and checking on her tells her that something is genuinely wrong.

Buy the refill alongside the diffuser at the start of November. The vial runs for roughly thirty days and running out halfway through Bonfire Night week is the most common way people conclude the thing does not work.

10Pet Remedy natural de-stress plug-in diffuser
A valerian based alternative that works on a different mechanism to the pheromone plug-ins, so it is worth trying if Adaptil did nothing. Same rule applies: start it a fortnight before you need it, not on the night.
View on AmazonBeing left alone
The mechanism to aim at is simple. You want the moment you leave to predict something good rather than something frightening, and you want the first thirty minutes filled with an absorbing job. Food does both.
Freeze everything. A stuffed toy handed over at room temperature lasts four minutes and a frozen one lasts thirty, and thirty is roughly the window in which most non-clinical distress either settles or does not.

11KONG Wobbler treat dispenser
Weighted base, tips and rights itself, drops kibble as he shoves it about. Feed a whole meal from it instead of a bowl and you have turned ten seconds of eating into twenty minutes of work, which is exactly what you want in the first hour after you leave.

12Vivifying snuffle mat, 66 x 42cm
Sniffing lowers arousal in a way that almost nothing else does. Scatter her breakfast into the fleece strips and let her work. This is the cheapest genuinely effective item on the list and the one most people underrate.

13Furbo 360 dog camera with treat toss
Worth it for the diagnosis more than the treats. Most people have no idea whether their dog settles after four minutes or howls for four hours, and until you know that you are guessing. Record a normal departure before you spend anything else.
View on AmazonA lick mat belongs in this list too, and ours launches on Amazon UK this autumn alongside the rest of our range. You can see it on our products page, and the lick mats and slow feeders guide explains why licking in particular settles a dog.
Chewing and licking are self-soothing
Both release tension. A dog who chews when he is worried is doing the canine equivalent of pacing, and the useful response is to give him something legitimate and hard-wearing to do it on rather than to interrupt him.
Match the chew to the chewer honestly. Most destroyed toys are a sizing failure, not a quality failure.
For the chewer

The black compound, for the dog who has already destroyed the red one. Chewing is self soothing behaviour, so the answer to a heavy chewer is rarely to stop him and usually to give him something that survives him.

15Benebone Wishbone chew, real bacon
The shape is the clever part. Three arms mean she can pin one with a paw and get her back teeth onto another, so she can actually settle into it rather than chasing it round the kitchen floor.
View on Amazon
16Nylabone Extreme Tough chew bones, multipack
A multipack is the sensible way in, because chew preference is completely individual and there is no way to predict which flavour or texture your dog will commit to. Replace any nylon chew once the ends are worn down.

17Pets Purest Himalayan yak chews with milk
Hard cheese chews that last. They soften slowly as he works at them, which is the opposite of a rawhide and much better for a dog who chews to calm down rather than to eat. Take the last stub off him before it becomes small enough to swallow.
View on AmazonSlow the meals down
Fast eating and high arousal travel together. Turning one bowl of food into fifteen minutes of problem solving is the single cheapest change most owners can make, and it works on the boredom-shaped anxiety described at the top far better than any plug-in will.

18Outward Hound slow feeder bowl, large
A hundred and thirty thousand reviews. A dog who inhales a meal in eleven seconds is not a calm dog, and the ridged maze forces her to slow to something closer to a normal pace. Wash it properly, the channels hold food.

19Nina Ottosson Treat Tumble puzzle ball, level 1
Start at level one, not level four. The point of a puzzle feeder is a dog who succeeds and relaxes, not a dog who fails and gets frustrated, and an anxious dog handles frustration badly. Move up only once he solves this one quickly.
View on AmazonThe car
Car anxiety is often two problems wearing one coat: motion sickness and the fact that the only journeys a lot of dogs make end at the vet. Fix the second one by driving somewhere good five times for every time you drive somewhere clinical.

20Lesure waterproof booster car seat, 54.5 x 49.5 x 38cm
For the small dog who whines the whole way and settles the moment she can see out of the window. Height solves more car anxiety than anything else at this size. Anchor it properly and clip her harness to it, and read our car travel guide on Rule 57 before you set off.
View on AmazonWhat we would skip
- Calming supplements and treats. The market is enormous, the regulation is light and the evidence for most of them is thin. If you want to try a supplement, ask your vet which one, because they see what actually works across a caseload rather than one dog.
- Anti-bark collars of every kind. Citronella, ultrasonic, static. Suppressing the noise an anxious dog makes does not reduce the anxiety, it removes your only warning signal.
- A second dog to keep the first company. A dog with separation distress is attached to you, not to dogs in general. You will usually end up with two anxious dogs.
Talk to your vet
Everything above is management. It makes a worried dog more comfortable and it gives you room to work, but none of it is a diagnosis and none of it replaces a professional who can actually examine your dog.
Your vet is the right first call about any change in behaviour, and they can refer you to a qualified clinical animal behaviourist if that is what is needed. We are not vets and we cannot tell you what is going on with your particular dog.
Two Feet Four Paws launches on Amazon UK this autumn. Four things we use with our own dogs: a deshedding rake and comb, a silicone lick mat, a foldable travel bowl and compostable poo bags. See the range.
